Which method is cheapest and most practical by trip length and region? Cost examples and tips.
How you connect to the internet when travelling abroad directly affects the comfort and budget of the trip. There are three main methods: your operator's roaming pack, a local SIM in the destination country and global eSIM packs. Trip length and usage decide which suits you.
1. Roaming pack
You keep your existing number and buy a pack. The benefit: your number stays the same, and SMS verification and calls are not interrupted. At Lavanta the 7-day 5 GB pack for Region 1 is 299 TRY. The drawback: it is usually a little more expensive than local SIMs.
2. Local SIM
Bought at the airport or a shop in the destination country. Data prices are often low, but since you get a local number you may not receive SMS (such as bank verification) sent to your Turkish number. In some countries registration also needs your passport and time.
3. Global eSIM
A digital pack bought before the trip and activated on arrival. It balances price and convenience; it sits on your eSIM-capable phone as an extra profile and does not switch off your main number. It makes particular sense for trips shorter than ten days.
Which is cheaper? An example
Take someone staying seven days in Region 1 who will use 3 GB data, 60 minutes of calls and 10 SMS. On pay-as-you-go they pay about 2,610 TRY for 3 GB, 1,440 TRY for calls and 80 TRY for SMS, 4,130 TRY in total. With a roaming pack the data costs 299 TRY and the total falls to 1,819 TRY. The saving is 2,311 TRY. You can try your own scenario in our roaming calculator.
Saving tips
- Always buy a pack before travelling; roaming without a pack is very expensive.
- Turn on Wi-Fi calling on hotel and restaurant Wi-Fi so you pay no call charges.
- Download offline maps beforehand in map and translation apps.
- Turn off background data refresh and auto-play video.
- Set the spending alert abroad to a limit such as 500 TRY.
Conclusion
On short trips a roaming pack or global eSIM; on long stays a local SIM or a 30-day roaming pack is generally the most sensible. If you have transactions that expect a verification code on your number, be sure to keep your Turkish number active as well.
Points to consider by country
Within the European Union, inter-operator charges are regulated, so the difference between roaming and a local SIM is often small. In Region 2 countries such as the USA, the Gulf and the Far East, a local SIM or global eSIM can make a noticeable difference. In some countries (certain Asian countries, for instance) there are tourist-specific SIMs and airport kiosks; they are convenient but can be pricey.
Factors affecting connection speed
Abroad, speed depends on the partner network in the country you visit. Roaming generally offers 4G/LTE; in rural areas it may drop to 3G. Before relying on hotel Wi-Fi for a critical meeting or cloud backup, we recommend running a speed test.
